Neural codes

(potential)

Frequency-only

This category contains codes in which all of the information is contained in the average frequency of the spike train, rather than in the precise timing of individual spikes.

Possibly related to the word 'tonic'.

Spike-timing

This category contains codes in which the precise timing of each individual spike (alternately, some related thing such as the ISIs) is important.

Possibly related to the word 'phasic'.

Probabalistic spike-timing

This category contains codes in which the average frequency of the spike train is not enough to measure the information being transmitted, but the precise timing of each individual spike is also not important; rather, information is being transmitted in some other way that requires the collection of many spikes and averaging of some quantity.

Radically-ensemble coding

This category contains codes in which the spike trains of neurons are individually meaningless, but information is transmitted in the relationship between spike trains of multiple neurons.
