notes-politics-negativeTaxRate

An interesting compromise between a basic income and no basic income would be a negative tax rate; if your income is below a certain limit, the government matches your income (possibly at some multiple), with a ceiling set so that your total income after matching is never more than the top of that tax bracket. For example, you could say that if income is below $10,000, then the government 1x matches your income, up to a limit of $10000 total after-match income; so if as long as you earn $5000 or more, you still get $10000.

This is interesting because it might be a compromise proposal that has something for both the everyone-should-have-a-strong-incentive-to-work crowd and the pro-basic-income crowd.
