For file and formats, plaintext, or plaintext with lightweight markup, is often better than formats such as binary or XML.
eg:
- plaintext slideshows and text documents can be put under version control, and can be used by people on any operating system without needing to purchase software
- plaintext to-do lists can be edited both in special todo apps, and also with a normal text editor
- plaintext accounting documents can be put under version control
- plaintext grant submissions focus attention on content rather than on format requirements
