Conventions in my notes and on this website
Please note that many pages on this website are full of notes to myself -- often i copy and paste things that other people have said without bothering to attribute them (since i can just use google to find the original). So please don't think that everything here was written by me. You can usually tell which pages are full of copied and pasted bits of other people's words, and which are a coherent presentation of an idea that i wrote myself.
In my notes (and sometimes elsewhere), I often (but not unevenly) adopt a number of shortcuts to make it more efficent to read and to write the notes:
- Don't capitalize letters, except for the first letter of the second or later sentence within a paragraph.
- omit periods at the end of a paragraph (or list items).
- omit quotation marks and attribution, when I think that it is clear from context that something is a quote (eg comments w/ header copied from a forum such as lobste.rs). By 'when it is clear' I only mean when it is clear to me, not necessarily when it is clear to other readers -- these are my notes after all
- omit commas surrounding double quotation marks
- don't use quotation marks or use them sloppily around quotations taken from other places if i give attribution at the beginning or end of a bunch of quotes
- use triple quotation marks to delimit a quotation that spans multiple paragraphs or otherwise has vertical whitespace contained within it
- use double or triple parens or curly braces to indicate a comment written by me within the content of a quotation from another place
- use abbreviations, in lowercase, without periods (for example, 'eg' or 'tho')
