" OSSU provides an environment where all learners and contributors can feel safe and welcome. This document outlines our community policies and values. Rules

    Learn and help others learn.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow OSSUnians.
    Criticize ideas, not people.
Discuss publicly. Refrain from direct messaging people unless it is specifically requested.
Ask questions; don't ask to ask. There’s no need to write "Is there anyone that can help me with X?" Just ask about X.

Prohibitions

No violence or threats of violence of any kind.
No sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or any other prejudiced or discriminatory language or actions; this includes jokes.
No sexual harrasment, including unwelcome sexual advances or offensive remarks about a person's sex.
No cursing or swearing at other people (but feel free to use curses and swears about the #$%@ code, IDE, language, hardware or physics).
No NSFW material. This includes nudity, gore, or any other potentially disturbing imagery.
No revealing another's private information against their wishes (doxxing).
No stalking or intimidation, online or otherwise.
No spamming, trolling, flaming, or other disruptions of the peace.
No inappropriate usernames. Moderators will change your name if it is found to be NSFW or derogatory.
No advocating or threatening of any of the above behaviors.

Reporting and Moderation

Moderators can be emailed at EMAIL. On the OSSU Discord server, users can use @moderator to alert the mod team about an issue in a channel.

If you see any behavior that goes against the Code of Conduct, report it to the moderation team as soon as possible, either privately or publicly.

Violation of the terms in this Code of Conduct will result in consequences that will depend on a) the severity of the violation, and b) history of violations. Possible consequences include: temporary mute, being kicked from participation, temporary or permanent banning from all future participation in the community.

If you feel that you have been treated unjustly, you may contact a moderator or community organizer and explain your grievance. Your grievance will be handled by moderator consensus. "

(NOTE: there are details of each of the above rules if you expand a link that i didn't include here)

" Safety Content Moderation

If someone has not violated any of the Rules, but you would still prefer not to interact with them, here are some tools you can utilize.

Room moderators decide who is in a room and can speak:

Accept or reject speakers: If you are a room moderator you decide who can speak. If you’d like to invite someone from the audience to speak, just tap on the profile photo of that user and select “Invite to Speak.” If someone else requests to speak, you have the option to decline.
Mute or remove speakers: Rooms moderators can also temporarily mute a speaker or move them back to the audience. To mute the speaker, tap on their profile photo to open the half-sheet, and then tap the mute button to the right of their profile photo. To move them down to the audience, tap on their profile photo to open the half-sheet, then tap “‘Move to Audience.”
Remove from room: If someone is being disruptive or distressing to people in the room, moderators can remove them, and they will no longer see or be able to re-enter the room. To remove them from room, tap on their profile half-sheet, tap the ellipses and remove.

Anyone can decide who they interact with:

Unfollow: You can unfollow a user at any time. To do so, navigate to the user’s profile and tap on the button that says “Following” to unselect it. They won’t be notified, and you won’t receive any further notifications about their activity.
Block: You can block a user at any time. On their profile, click on the 3 vertical dots in the top right, and select “Block.”
Blocked users will not be able to see or join any room that you create or in which you are a moderator or speaker.
If a blocked user is speaking in a room that would otherwise be visible to you, that room will be hidden from your feed by default, but there will be a capsule at the bottom of your feed to let you know that the hidden room exists. If you would like to see the room regardless, you can choose to tap that capsule and reveal the room.
If you are just an audience member in the room and a blocked user enters the audience, you will not be proactively notified.
Shared block lists: If there is someone who many people in your network have blocked, there will be a "!" icon on that person’s user profile to make you aware. This is personalized to you, and is intended to help you make decisions about when to follow someone or bring them up on stage.

Incident Reporting

We depend on the vigilance of each user and the community to report violations of Rules. If you believe a user has violated a Rule, you can report a Trust & Safety incident. Note: Inappropriate use of the incident reporting system or intentional, false reports are against our rules and are taken seriously.

Temporary audio recording: Solely for the purpose of supporting incident investigations, we temporarily record the audio in a room while the room is live. If a user reports a Trust and Safety violation while the room is active, we retain the audio for the purposes of investigating the incident, and then delete it when the investigation is complete. If no incident is reported in a room, we delete the temporary audio recording when the room ends. Audio from (i) muted speakers and (ii) audience members is never captured, and all temporary audio recordings are encrypted.

You can report an incident in 2 ways:

Report an incident in real time: From inside a room, tap on the user you want to report. A profile "half-sheet" will pop up; tap the three horizontal dots at the top right, then tap “Report an incident." Submitting a report from inside the room prompts us to retain the temporary, encrypted audio recording for the purpose of investigating the incident, as noted above.
Report a past incident: To report an incident after the room has ended, you can go to the profile of the user you want to report, tap the three horizontal dots at the top right, then tap “Report an incident." Note that when you report an incident directly from a user's profile, we will not have access to any room’s audio to support the investigation.

Here’s what you should know about reporting another user for a Rule violation:

If you submit a report, we will not share your identity with the person you reported.
All reports that are submitted will be reviewed and investigated. The need for and type of corrective or disciplinary action needed will be determined on a case by case basis.
We seek to be fair, consistent, and responsive in addressing all reported incidents.
If the violation directly targeted you, we may share certain information about the process and resolution with you (e.g., the stage of investigation, any concerns that you may be at risk for immediate harm, information on how the resolution could impact you).
Intentional, false reports of violations are treated as a violation of the Rules.

If another user has reported you for violating a Rule, here’s what you should know:

If a report has been filed against you, we may contact you through your Clubhouse account with information about the nature of the report. We may keep some details private in order to protect the reporting user(s). If we are unable to reach you, we may restrict your account access temporarily until we are able to do so.
We will notify you of the result of the investigation and its potential impact to you.
If you believe a report has been falsely filed against you or you would like to appeal a decision, please contact us, including as much context as possible.
Any attempt to retaliate against users who participate in reporting or investigation is a violation.

If your account has been suspended, please follow this process for inquiry or appeal:

If your account is flagged for a potential violation of our Rules, your account may be temporarily or permanently restricted or removed from the platform.
If you believe your account did not violate our Rules, contact our Trust & Safety team through this form. Please include your Clubhouse username, verified email address, and reference to the original decision notification you received.
Please keep the following in mind when submitting an appeal:
Decision appeals must originate from the user who received the notice.
Clubhouse does not accept nor consider appeals on behalf of another user.
Submitting multiple appeals concurrently may result in a delay in review.
Once you submit the appeal, the Clubhouse Trust & Safety Team will decide whether or not to review it based on the Rule violation in question. Please note that not all Trust & Safety enforcement decisions are eligible for an appeal.

These are examples of potential consequences for Rules violations (non-exhaustive):

Provide a warning for a first offense of low severity and impact
Request the removal of or directly remove offending content
Restrict the ability to participate in some or all conversations
Temporarily or permanently disable or remove the account
Notify law enforcement when there is risk of physical harm or a threat to public safety

Consequences for confirmed violations may vary based on the type and severity of the violation, the impact to victim(s), the historical actions of the offending user, and the intent of the actions. Legal note

Finally, please keep in mind this quick legal note on our Community Guidelines, violations, and how we may enforce them:

You are solely responsible for your interactions with other Clubhouse users and you agree that we will have no liability or responsibility with respect to those interactions.
We understand that not all Clubhouse users will share our views as to what constitutes a violation of these Community Guidelines. However, to operate a functional platform, we must reserve the right to determine in our sole discretion what constitutes a violation.
Our failure to enforce these Community Guidelines in each and every instance in which it might have application does not amount to a waiver of our rights under our Terms of Service or these Community Guidelines.
We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to change portions of these Community Guidelines at any time. If we do this, we will post the changes on this page and will indicate at the top of this page the date these terms were last updated.

" Roblox Community Standards

At Roblox, we’re building the metaverse: a space for people to adventure, experience, and explore. We’re a global community on this journey together, and we want to ensure everyone feels welcome and safe and is treated with kindness and respect. That’s why we’ve created these Community Standards: to outline how we expect our users to behave, and to be clear up front about what is and isn’t allowed on Roblox.

Our Community Standards are organized into four sections:

    Safety
    Civility & Respect
    Fairness & Transparency
    Security & Privacy

These standards apply to all of your actions on Roblox and with other Robloxians, both online and at real-world events hosted by Roblox. You might notice that some of these rules prohibit things that certain other online platforms allow. That’s because of our determination to keep Roblox as safe as possible. We ask that you respect our standards — and understand that violating them may result in enforcement action against your account. We’re always learning, so as our community evolves and our platform grows, these standards may change too.

In short, when using Roblox, always remember to be kind. If you see something that you think violates the Community Standards, please let us know by using the Report Abuse feature. For more information about the legal relationship between you and Roblox, head over to our Terms of Use.

We appreciate your cooperation with these standards and commitment to making Roblox a safe and respectful space. SAFETY

We want our metaverse to be safe and welcoming for everyone, regardless of their identity or beliefs. To keep Roblox a place where everyone feels comfortable being themselves, the following is not allowed:

    Child Endangerment
Roblox has a zero-tolerance policy for endangering children. This includes:
Any predatory behavior, including attempting to befriend a child in order to manipulate and exploit them (i.e., grooming)

Engaging in sexual conversation with or soliciting sexual material from minors
Sharing, requesting, or discussing child sexual exploitation imagery
    Threats of Violence

        Sexual harassment
    Suicide and Self Harm
At Roblox, we take our users’ well-being very seriously. We’re here to help provide resources for those struggling with mental health, and we may communicate with law enforcement regarding credible threats of self-harm. Sexual acts

        Realistic depictions of extreme Gore

Fundraising for terrorist or extremist organizations, people, or groups
    Illegal and Regulated Activities
We prohibit users from discussing, depicting, or promoting illegal or highly-regulated activities. You also may not encourage others to violate their local laws, or do so yourself. These activities include:

Bomb- and weapon-making in the real world

Symbols and flags associated with discrimination

Abuse of Roblox Employees or Affiliates
Roblox expects its users to treat all Roblox employees, contractors, or affiliates with kindness and respect. Mistreating Roblox employees, contractors, or their families in any form, including via email, off-platform, or in-person could result in the loss of your account. This includes:

Threatening to share the employee or contractor’s personal information
Harassing Roblox employees or contractors online
Threatening damage or harm to Roblox offices or data storage facilities

FAIRNESS AND TRANSPARENCY

Roblox aims to build a community that’s transparent about its rules and how they’re enforced. We want Robloxians to trust each other to play fairly and honestly, and to respect one another’s creativity and hard work. To help build such a community, Roblox requires its users to follow their local laws and does not allow:

Sharing exploits with others or encouraging others to cheat
    Misleading Impersonation and Misrepresentation
Roblox encourages creativity, including in your avatar designs and username, but we don’t allow users to mislead others by impersonating other people’s real- or virtual-world identity or affiliations, including other users, Roblox employees, contractors, and affiliates, or public figures. This includes any attempts to impersonate in the following areas:
        Name or username
        Position in a company
        Digital representation
        A post or comment
This does not apply to satire, fan art, or tributes that are not misleading to other users.
    Intellectual Property Violations
We don’t allow users to violate intellectual property rights on Roblox, and will remove infringing content upon receiving a valid Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice or Trademark infringement removal request. Examples of intellectual property infringement may include:
Using another developer’s code to create your experience without their permission
Using another artist’s music in your experience

Copyright and trademark takedown requests can be filed here.

We don’t allow contests, games, or sweepstakes on the platform that offer Robux as a prize. This includes:
        Lottery-style games
Any use of the words “Play for R$” in games
        Offers of “free Robux”
If paid random items appear in your experience, they cannot be sold or traded for Robux, real currency, or anything else of value on Roblox. You also must use the applicable Policy API.
    Directing Users Off-Platform
When using Roblox, you may not link to any external websites or services, except for: YouTube, Facebook, Discord, Twitter, and Twitch. Links to any of those approved sites must be wrapped in the applicable Policy API or listed in the Social Networks and Social Links settings of your profile or experience description page. Links that appear in locations where the API cannot be deployed - such as text chat - are prohibited. Any other links are prohibited, including:
        Links that contain Roblox-inappropriate content
Partial links, filter-breaking, and permitted website links to non-permitted websites
Encouraging others to visit unpermitted external links
For their privacy and safety, we don’t permit users under 13 to share links.
    Advertising
You can place ads in your experience in the form of 3d assets, static images, or videos, as long as you directly upload the ad assets (‘direct upload ads’) and follow the rules outlined below. Roblox will determine, at its sole discretion, whether advertising or brand placement meets these requirements and we may reject ads whose content harms our relationship with our community or compromises our competitive interests (e.g., gaming platforms and development tools). If your ad violates these rules, we may remove the content or suspend your experience, or require you to remove the content, at any time and without notice.
Developers who place advertisements in their experiences remain responsible for all advertising content; ads must follow the Community Rules, the Terms of Use and all other Roblox rules.
You may not relinquish control of the ad serving logic in your experience, including by using third party ad servers.
Ads may not contain content intended for users under the age of 13.
Ads must comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”), Children’s Advertising Review Unit (“CARU”) and Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (“CFBAI”) guidelines, and all other applicable local laws and regulations.
Ads cannot falsely represent the content being advertised to encourage user engagement (e.g., offer free Robux).
Developers may only share aggregated user information with third party advertisers.

SECURITY AND PRIVACY

For our metaverse to thrive, the Roblox community must feel digitally safe as well as physically safe. We can achieve this by respecting each other’s private information and Roblox’s safety systems, and by keeping Roblox accounts and systems secure. This section describes how players and creators should treat others’ information and digital security. For information about how Roblox handles your personal information, please visit the Privacy Policy.

To maintain a safe metaverse, Roblox does not permit:

    Unauthorized Access
We prohibit any activity that is used to gain unauthorized access to Roblox’s systems or accounts, as well as threatening or encouraging such activity. This includes:

Attempting to hack another user’s account
        Launching any sort of cyberattack
Posting misleading links for the purpose of gaining unauthorized access (i.e., phishing)
Launching malicious software (i.e., malware) to cause damage to or gain access to another user’s computer.

Attempting to get prohibited content approved by our moderation team
Opening new accounts for the purpose of evading an enforcement action taken against a previous account
Using bots that are programmed to run disruptive, large-scale tasks
        Re-uploading previously-moderated content
Failing to use required policy APIs in your experience

Roblox maintains the Robux system for everyone’s benefit and enjoyment. To keep it secure, some uses of Robux are not permitted, including:
Using third-party services to sell, trade, or give away Robux. This does not apply to Roblox gift cards.
Promotional codes that falsely appear to be offered by Roblox itself
Inappropriate use of the group payout system, including offering payment in Robux for acting as a model for assets, joining groups, referring members, or role-playing in experiences.

Hacker News Guidelines, explained in Victorian English with GPT-3

The Hacker News guidelines, though often derided by those who do not understand them, are in fact a fine set of rules, designed to ensure that all who post there may do so with the assurance that their comments will be met with approbation by those of a similar persuasion

What to Submit

On-Topic: Those things that are of interest to good hackers, who are themselves interesting people of an inquiring turn of mind, are interesting. That includes more than the unseemly business of hacking and the vulgar pursuit of money through startups. If you put the question to me and asked me to reduce my answer to a single sentence, I should say that anything which gratifies one's intellectual curiosity is, in the broadest sense, a good.

Off-Topic: The discussion of politics, crime, and sports, though often interesting, is usually superfluous, and often brings about more harm than good. Videos of men and women, caught in the ignominy of their own clumsiness, or of natural disasters, or of animals frolicking in a manner that is at once both amusing and heartwarming. The nature of the event, though it may be of import to the participants, is of no greater consequence than the trivialities which occupy the minds of most men, and thus it should not be given the attention of those who would inform the public.

In Submissions

I implore you, O gentle reader, to forgo the ignoble practice of using exclamation points or all caps to make the titles of your articles more noticeable; and furthermore, to avoid praising your own work too highly in the summary. It is the unspoken but very real understanding, when one tenders a work for publication, that the editor will recognize the importance of the piece, and will consider it with the utmost gravity.

I would be grateful if you would submit the document from which you extracted your quotation. If a post reports on something found on another site, it is incumbent on the former to submit the latter to the authorities, so that they may assess the situation and then render a verdict.

If the title of the link includes the name of the site, please remove it, as the name of the site will be displayed after the link.

If you have the temerity to submit a video or pdf, I should be grateful if you would mark it as such, so as not to cause the undoing of my fragile sensibilities.

If your title should happen to contain an undue amount of numbers, or a number in conjunction with an adjective, we would be most appreciative if you would see to it that the said number or numbers were cropped. The five Platonic solids are the only convex regular polyhedra, and are of particular interest to mathematicians and philosophers.

It is my earnest and heartfelt desire that, except where the original title is misleading or a deliberate attempt to garner clicks, you would do me the great honor of retaining it.

The time is not ripe for idle banter on the vagaries of the world. Send your inquiry directly to hn@ycombinator.com.

Your hasty and ill-considered action in deleting, and then reposting, has caused considerable inconvenience to those who, like myself, had taken the time to comment upon your work. Deletion is for those things which, in the humble opinion of the writer, should not have been committed to the page in the first place, and which, upon further reflection, the writer has seen fit to remove.

I implore you, my good sir, to consider that Hacker News is not a mere vehicle for self-promotion, but a site where we come together to discuss the very nature of humanity itself. Please do not sully this beautiful place with your attempts to monetize it. While it is permissible to post one's own writings on the site, the primary purpose of the site should be as a depository of the curious and interesting thoughts of others.

It is unseemly to request, or in any way hint, that others may show their appreciation of your work by giving it their positive feedback in the form of an upvote, or by adding their commentary to the discussion, or by sharing your work with others. It is the earnest hope of the author that users of this site would take the trouble to vote and comment upon those submissions which they find interesting, and not use these mechanisms as a means of promoting their own submissions

In Comments

It is incumbent upon you, dear reader, to extend the hand of charity and goodwill toward your fellow man, and in so doing eschew all malice, unkindness, and sarcasm. I implore you, do not take up your pen in anger and unleash a seething torrent of invective against my person, for I have only the deepest respect for you, and it would cause me great pain to know that I had caused you distress. Please do not sneer, including at the rest of the community, whose interests you do not represent, whose intelligence you do not comprehend, who suffer while you prosper, who live in ignorance of your existence while you enjoy the fruit of their labors.

It is the general belief of all who hold opinions on the matter that comments should be more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as the topic under discussion becomes more divisive.

When in the arena of discourse, the more civilized way to proceed is to address the argument of one's counterpart with civility and respect, and not to resort to the use of epithets and pejoratives that do little more than reveal the speaker's own lack of decorum. The simple statement that one plus one equals two, and not three, is a most profound and elegant summation of the human condition, and the very cornerstone of our beliefs.

In all human intercourse, the spirit in which we choose to hear what another has to say will determine whether we gain from the communication what was intended to be conveyed. The assumption of good faith is a fundamental rule in human interaction, and ought to be the governing principle in all our dealings with our fellow man.

The flames of anger and hatred are the surest way to reduce a man's reason to cinders. It is wise not to engage in fruitless debates with those who would muddy the waters, or to stray from the course at hand, or to allow oneself to be caught up in foolishness that has no bearing on the matter at hand.

It is of grave concern to me that you would so thoughtlessly belittle the hard-earned efforts of others; your callousness is an affront to the very idea of civilized society, and I implore you to refrain from such misguided and contemptible behavior. The purpose of criticism is to promote a greater understanding of the subject at hand, by revealing the hidden complexities which often escape the casual observer.

The Hacker News community is a place for discussion of ideas and technology, not a forum for the petty and rancorous disputes that so often characterize the political and ideological battles of our time. Let us keep it clean and civil, so that all may benefit from the collective wisdom of our community." It tramples curiosity, as a beast of burden tramples grass, with the same heedlessness and the same inevitability.

It is in the nature of man's baser nature to judge, and to be judged, for the contents of one's mind, though it is not for me to say whether or not someone read an article. Do not, I beg of you, inquire whether or not I have read the article in question, but rather, let us discuss the article's contents, for I fear that to inquire after my reading habits would be a grave discourtesy.

Would it be too much to ask that you refrain from selecting the most inflammatory statement in a work and then using it as the basis for your criticisms in this forum? I believe it would behoove you to find a more interesting topic of conversation, rather than this one, which leaves me quite bored.

There is nothing more essential to the safety of one's information than the security of one's account, and though in some cases the necessity of a throwaway account is clear, in others the benefit of a more permanent record is of greater import. Please exercise discretion in these matters. The HN community should have an identity that others can relate to. That is to say, users should have an identity

The use of uppercase for emphasis is to be eschewed, as it is the mark of the amateur and the vulgarian. If you wish to emphasize a word or phrase, you may encase it in *asterisks*, which will cause the typesetter to render it in italics.

It is my hope that, in the interests of elevating public discourse, you will refrain from posting allegations of artificial support, promotional activity, automated or fake accounts, and similar disruptive behavior, as such claims are often unfounded and tend to damage the level of rational discussion. If you are pained by any external circumstance, it is not this that disturbs you, but your own judgment about it. And it is in your power to wipe out that judgment now.

Do not complain to me, gentle reader, that a submission is inappropriate. Rather, take it upon yourself to peruse the rules and guidelines, and to use your best judgment in making a decision. If you find a story to be spam or off-topic, you are within your rights as a reader to report it to the moderators, that it might be dealt with swiftly and the site returned to its former glory. Do not attempt to engage those who would fling the most vile and abhorrent comments; instead, report them so that they might be dealt with swiftly and with the utmost severity. It is the custom of many a gentleman to flag, when the arduous journey has become too much for their failing strength, yet they will not deign to offer the lady a word of explanation or apology, but will continue to drive on relentlessly, as if nothing were amiss, leaving the poor lady to wonder what has become of her escort, and whether he has met with foul play.

I implore you, dear reader, to set aside your petty grievances; trifling things such as the format of an article or website, the unfortunate repetition of a name, or the vexing loss of information when pressing the back button. They are so common and so lacking in originality that they have no interest whatsoever.

I entreat you, do not make mention of the voting on comments, for it is a thing which I hold in the deepest contempt and loathing, and I would rather not hear the word 'comment' ever again. The futility of the act, and the resulting ennui of the reader, is clear.

I implore you, my fellow citizens of the Hacker News community, to resist the urge to say that Hacker News is degenerating into something as plebeian and unenlightened as Reddit. It is a deception that has been used by the ignorant since time immemorial. to make them believe they are not as ignorant as they truly are.

I should be greatly obliged if you would indicate your approval of my work by giving it your highest rating on GitHub?.
