If you get "Allowed memory size of xxxxxx bytes exhausted" upon updating or upgrading (or at any other time), first try:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

if that doesn't work, your host may have capped the memory limit (nearlyfreespeech caps it at 32MB a of this writing, unless you pay more: http://faq.nearlyfreespeech.net/full/phpmemorylimit ).

To decrease your memory usage, try deactivating most of your plugins. First, go to Plugins and select Active ( /wp-admin/plugins.php?plugin_status=active ) to get a list of active plugins. Copy that list down somewhere. Now use this screen to mass deactivate them.
