opinions-political-taxes

I'm in favor of lower taxes (although I think we should lower taxes for the poor first). There are many government projects that could (and should) be cut before education. I feel that the government is the least efficient way to accomplish most tasks, so most projects that could be accomplished without it, should. Tax cuts help encourage spending cuts, which is good.

Now, this doesn't imply that education funding should be cut (I think it should probably be increased). The reason education is underfunded, though, is not that the government does not have enough money, but rather that we choose to spend our money on other things. My feeling is that this is the legitimate desire of the voters, not some distortion by the politicians (I used to live in a rich town which kept cutting funds to its school system unreasonably while the population of kids was increasing. Why? Simply because 2/3 of the residents didn't have kids and didn't want to pay for them). So there is little to be done about it besides try and convince people that they should be more altruistic and be willing to set aside, through their government spending priorities, more money for the future in the form of other people's kids, and less money for themselves. -- BayleShanks
