There's a (now-) obvious analogy between a cell and a computer. One would think that the nucleus is part most analogous to the operating system kernel (or bootstrap loader, maybe), but i actually think it's the nucleolus. The nucleolus makes ribosomes, which make the proteins from DNA, and according to wikipedia the nucleolus also traffics some RNA, and is involved with cell cycle regulation.
