Review of the Fujitsu Lifebook T580

My first thoughts were: for a 10 inch computer, it's super thick and heavy. I bought it to keep in my messenger bag, and it fits there nicely, like a thick, smallish textbook, but it does make the bag noticably heavier; I wouldn't want to take it on a long hike. Certainly I wouldn't sit in bed and hold it up for a long period of time, as I might with a notebad, paperback book, or perhaps an iPad (i don't have an iPad, because i don't have much need for non-open source operating systems).

However, after a few days of taking it with me everywhere in the messenger bag, i realized that i don't mind the weight at all.

Compared to larger laptops which are not of the slim/lightweight variety, it's about the same weight. So it's not really that heavy in absolute terms, it's just heavier than you might wish a 10 inch computer to be.

The silver lining of the weight is that it feels like when the unit is closed (not in slate configuration, but closed), the screen won't crack as easily as it otherwise might, because it's encased in a suit of armor (it isn't so great, though; it still flexes if you push down on the top).

The top surface is slick and slippery, and the unit is unevenly weighted, heavy near the hinge and light in front, so if you pick it up by the front while in closed configuration, it feels like it might slip out of your hand. However, picking it up by the back (the hinge) works great because there is an edge, not just a smooth contour.

The battery is not that large or comparatively heavy, so if you order a spare battery, it will be easy to take it with you whenever you think you may need it.

It's really quiet.

The powercord has an attached velcro cordwrapper, which is handy.

It seems to be fast (not that i can tell). I was worried that since the CPU clock speed is slower than my previous, Core 2 Duo computer (lenovo x61t), it might not be faster, but it is.
