to make Gmail make noise when an email from a certain sender arrives, even if it's on DND:

1) In the browser version of Gmail, create a filter for emails from that sender, and upon the filter, apply a label. You can create a label for that sender, or you can create a generic one like 'Alert'

2) In the Gmail app, go into Settings (hamburger menu, then almost all the way down), select the email account to which the alerting email will come, go down to the Notifications section, change Notifications from 'High priority only' (my default) to 'All', make sure "Notify for inbox sections" is None, make sure that when you go into "Inbox notifcations" that "Label notifications" is off, go into "Manage labels", go into the label you created above (eg 'Alert'), turn on 'Sync messages' by setting to 'Last 30 days', turn on 'Label notifications', turn on 'Notify for every message', go back out to the Notifications section of Settings (within Gmail app), select Manage Notifications, change from Silent to Default, go back out to the Settings menu, select Notification sounds, change from Default (None) to the sound you choose

3) pull down the widget menu from the top of the screen, long press on Do not disturb, under What can interrupt, click on Apps, Add apps, select Gmail

4) to test, in the browser version of Gmail, make it also apply the 'Alert' label (or whichever one you created/chose) to your own emails, then put your phone into Do Not Disturb and put it to sleep and send yourself an email

to turn off again, reverse all these steps!
