It seems that human thought has something similar to computer APIs. Example: if you logically lay out knowledge, philosophy belongs at the base/the root. So it would seem that one's interpretation and knowledge of everything else depends on one's philosophy. Yet, most ppl don't ever have the time to completely flesh out their philosophy, and yet they can have seemingly well-defined interpretations and knowledge of other things. Also, people with different philosophies can communicate and even often agree on other things, with only the occasional venture into philosophical territory to map their differences in that realm. So, it seems that different philosophies, although seemingly fundamental, are actually somewhat interchangable.

This seems to be what the computer scientists studying ontologies and ontology mapping are trying to construct.
