notes from Virtual Workplace Dos and Don'ts : http://www.businessweek.com/technology/ceo_tipsheet/2007_2.htm
- Get high-quality headsets and computers and high quality other gear
- Encourage small talk.
- Online; and also have offline get-togethers
- "Help them stop. The trouble with most virtual workers isn't that they slack off, but that they don't know when to call it a day... that extra work can lead to burnout. Encourage employees to have personal lives."
- "When telecommuters do come into the office, they want to be seen, not stashed away in a corner". Setup temporary offices and make them visible to others.
- Set goals. Manage by objective, not by "walking around" (since you can't).
- Don't neglect training
- Also, most new hires should come to work for awhile before going virtual
- Managers should check-in each day with subordinates
- Some workers simply aren't a good fit for virtual work, or don't like it
- Offsite employees should use shared calendars and IM presence indicators to let others know when they are available
- "Certain activities such as brainstorming work best when team members are together in one room"
