there's a zillion programs that you can install on your webserver. the trend seems to be for popularity to focus on a few (supposedly) "best of breed" for each product category. this page is an attempt to figure out what these are. I looked at the list of Dream Host Apps and Sourceforge Hosted Apps. after each entry, in parens, is an indication of which sources listed this program. programs that i'm not sure are that popular (e.g. ones i'd never heard of before this, and which have less than about 600,000 hits on google; sometimes i searched for a related term, i.e. "mantis bug tracker", because "mantis" would also get pages for praying mantis) have a questionmark after them. Dream Host Apps also includes a few Google Apps, that is, programs that you can't install on your own server, but that you can install on your own website by redirecting (CNAMEing) a subdomain of your site to Google (and possibly paying a fee, if you have more than 50 users). These are all open source except for the Google Apps.
