summary

planning to buy an Inspiron Duo, or Fujitsu LifeBook? T580 (Intel Core i3 380UM (or i5?) Processor 1.2GHz, 4GB RAM). T580 is 270 x 189 x 40, 1.4 kg; duo is 285 x 195 x 26, 1.5 kg; viliv s10 is 260 x 185 x 25, 1.2kg; ipad is 243 x 190 x 13, .7kg; t1005m is 265 x 214 x 41 1.5kg. x61t is 33.1x274x267 , (2kg, w/ 8-cell). M1125 (renamed to T1125?) is 290 x 221 x 40, 1.7kg?. dell m11x: 286 x 233 x 33, 2kg, inspiron mini 1012: 267 x 197 x 32, 1.2kg (no touchscreen). acer as1830t: 285 x 204 x 28, 1.4kg. toshiba t235: 299.2 x 226.5 x 44.3, 2.1kg. inspiron m101z: 292 x 205 x 35, 1.56kg. s10-3t: Size 280mm x 174 mm x 15mm - 28mm with 4cell (max 4h) weight 1.25kg Size 282mm x 202 mm x 15mm - 35mm with 8cell (max 10h) weight 1.50kg. the Duo does not have a video output, so i guess it's out of the running -- and the LifeBook? is really expensive. Acer is coming out with a convertible tablet in febuary: http://www.netbooknews.com/14445/10-acer-convertible-tablet-with-amd-dual-core-win-7-keyboard-dock/ . in the video it looks like it is too cumbersome to dock with the keyboard. so i guess the gigabyte T1005M is looking good -- it's not quite as good as the T580, but it's available now, and almost a quarter of the price.

macbook air 11" is sufficiently small but i don't want it (no touch). it is 300 x 192 x 17 1.1kg

so, ideal is: Intel Core i?, <=300 x <=198 x <= 35, <= 1.4kg, light touch touchscreen (convertible), physical keyboard, >= 2G memory, video out. will settle for:

Atom dual processor, <= 300, <=215, x<=40, <=1.5, light touch touchscreen (convertible), physical keyboard, >= 2G memory, video out.

(was: planning to buy a viliv s10 before my next trip (assuming GNU/Linux compatibility) and one of lenovo thinkpad x201 tablet, toshiba portege m70, hp elitebook 2740p when they come down in price, after checking GNU/Linux compatibility.)

mb other models with core 2010 and mb capacitative multitouch will come out before then (e.g. mb hp touchsmart, which is capacitative, will be upgraded to i5 or i7), and mb the x201 tablet will get a 620m (although i doubt it, based on the hp elitebook config page, the 620m seems to take up more space), so i'll research more before buying.

want android phone with 5 row physical keyboard, at least 512 memory, at least 800khz cpu

would prefer staggered, curved keys on the keyboard

summary: i'm really reluctant to buy anything with only 1gb of memory, nonexpandable, but we'll see. i'd get it if a 2gb version comes out.

i used to think resistive touch required too much pressure, but i've heard they've addressed that now, mb i should try this. 38:37 "you can barely touch and it works" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxnDq4Hr30w .

those guys love it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlsd2Zu5XK4 (umpcportal and jkk mobile)

this guy loves it:

http://netbooked.net/blog/10-inch-tablet-convertible-netbooks-compared-viliv-s10-wins/

then again this guy hates the viliv. he says the screen viewing angle is terrible and the weak hinge and lack of a lock means the screen moves when u touch it:

http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/03/24/review-viliv-s10-blade-convertible-netbook/

also it only has 1gb of RAM!!!

btw this guy hates the viliv s7: http://gizmodo.com/5361019/viliv-s7-review-looks-so-good-tastes-so-bad

Lenovo ideapad s10-3t

weaknesses: it's not IPS. Apparently it has a 2.5" SATA drive bay, so i guess i could add a flash ssd? According to http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/ideapad-s10-3t.aspx?page=3 , you need the big battery, which according to other sources is too big, and the wireless is weak.

i cant find other capacitative multitouch netvertible choices.

however reviews of the s10-3t all seem to dislike it, so mb should go for a non-capacitative one?

" Hivision PWS700A $100 Android netbook gets video review By Chris Davies on Saturday, Jan 30th 2010 No Comments

Android was tipped as the open-source OS that could finally deliver true budget netbook-style devices – we’re talking around the $100 mark, not the $200-plus – and Hivision had just the thing at CES 2010 earlier this month. Over at ARM Devices, Charbax has been reviewing the Hivision PWS700CA, a 7-inch netbook based on a 600MHz ARM926 processor that could feasibly come in under $100 to consumers. "
